Program (Course) Description

TAYA 2012 is designed to address the medical, psychosocial, and socioeconomic issues of the Adolescent and Young Adult with cancer that impact the survival and long term quality of life of this neglected population of patients.

 

Who Should Attend?
This conference is designed for health care professionals.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity participants will be able to:
  • Evaluate treatment options and assess current outcomes in the AYA with testicular, ovarian and breast cancers.
  • Evaluate the usefulness of stem cell transplant in AYA's with cancer.
  • Identify the elements crucial for the development of a community AYA Oncology program.
  • Gain knowledge concerning recent advances in preservation of fertility and available resources for the AYA with cancer.
  • Learn the value of genetic testing for breast and colon cancer in AYA's.
  • Review the epidemiology of AYA cancers in Texas.
  • Examine transition of care issues for young adults survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer.
  • Evaluate the effect in access to care for the AYA with cancer under new Healthcare Reform Law.

Friday, March 2nd:park at the CTRC, Lot 20 (Visitor's Lot) or at the MARC Visitor's Parking in the garage.


Saturday, March 3rd:park in any surface spot at the GCCRI Lot 19, as long as you don't park in the disabled spaces without a disabled placard. (Map attached with circled Lot 19). Parking is also available at the CTRC Visitor Parking Lot 20, and CTRC Garage Visitor Spaces.

CALL FOR POSTERS
This call for posters is for the 2nd Annual Texas Adolescent & Young Adult 2012 Oncology Conference on March 2-3, 2012, at the Greehey Children's Cancer Research Institute at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, 8403 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio.

Background
Anyone is welcome to submit an abstract concerning AYA’s with cancer. All disciplines are encouraged to

participate, e.g. junior faculty, fellows, nursing, etc.  Work can be “in progress,” completed or previously

presented in another forum. Posters might include: clinical, translational or basic research; disease

committee work; clinical practice topics; case report learning; etc. All abstracts will be accepted.

Three abstracts will be selected for 10-minute oral presentations.


Abstract Submission Instructions
The abstract should be no longer than 1 page, with 1" margins and use 12 point Times New Roman font.  The abstract should include a title, list of authors, and department/division affiliation. The body of the abstract should include background/introduction, methods, results, and conclusion/significance/impact.

Poster Instructions
If your abstract is accepted; you will be responsible for developing a poster using the following general rules and guidelines:

  • The poster board should be 4 feet tall by 6 feet wide.
  • The top of the poster should feature the title of the project/program, the principal investigator, and any other contributors.
  • The content of the poster should be divided into appropriate sections (i.e., background/introduction, aims, methods, data/results, conclusions, significance/impact, etc.). Include illustrations if possible – figures, tables, color photographs, charts. The material should be well labeled and legible from a distance of 2 yards.
  • We will provide a mounting board and thumbtacks for displaying posters.
