Course Description
This online enduring material presentation will focus principles of pain management for the geriatric and/or palliative care patient. This presentation is designed to address the geriatric syndrome of pain and symptom management to improve patient outcomes leading to quality improvement.
Who Should Attend?
This activity is designed to meet the educational goals of physicians and other healthcare professionals specializing in internal medicine, family medicine, geriatrics, palliative medicine, and oncology. This activity focuses on inter-professional learning.
Learning Objectives
- To understand that a complaint of "pain" may include physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions
- To summarize pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of opioids
- To demonstrate how to use a stepwise process to switch opioid regimens when caring for patients with pain
- To recognize how to appropriately prescribe opioids and identify their side effects
- To review critical definitions such as dependence, addiction and tolerance
